We did it, we did it, we did it!
I made it through my third month here in Ghana!
I feel like this whole experience has been like a video game – I am spending my days trying to survive, collect memories through different adventures, keep my health up and not be charmed, spelled or cursed! Well, level up because I just beat Ghana Level 3!
I don’t know if I am more terrified that it is almost May or that I am almost finished with my semester here. Either way, time is flying by so so fast. What happened to when the days seemed to never end and the only time that went by too fast was recess? Oh yeah, I grew up.
I am currently writing this from an adorable cafe in Airport City where the electricity just went out. I had a nice coffee, a good breakfast and an amazing ice cream and chocolate brownie. Usually, I spend my weekends in our hostel doing a whole lot of nothing but this weekend I needed a change of pace. Yesterday my friends and I headed to a different suburb of Accra known as Osu. If I ever had to live in Accra, Osu would definitely be the place I would choose. It is only about a 20 minute Uber ride from Legon, depending on traffic. We went to some little stands on the side of the road, got some new fabrics and then ate lunch. I reallyyyy should stop buying fabrics but you only live once…right?
We went to a restaurant known as Burger and Relish and it is so good! The first time I went I got the kids chicken strips and Mac n’ cheese (surprise, surprise) and yesterday I got the southern fried chicken sandwich. After that we went to a sweet little gelato place and then headed back to campus. Today, my friends and I got up and have been here at Cafe Kwae for a good 3 hours.
I feel like there isn’t really much to update on since I just did a post on Ghana Month 2.5 a few weeks ago (if you haven’t seen it, check it out).
Clarissa and I went with a friend to a private beach called Bojo Beach! It was nice but the sunburns we both got were not. We both had sunscreen on, reapplied and weren’t even in direct sun for a total of 2 hours BUT I STILL TURNED PURPLE! That might be a little dramatic but it was hands down the worst sunburn I have ever had in my entire life. A UV index of 11 (out of 12) is not something to compete with.
Hello, my name is Morgan and my white skin is no match for this African sun.
If this were a real video game, that sunburn would have lost me some coins – Ghana Level Down (almost)
Clarissa and I are also still getting our weekly pizzas and tonight is pizza night!
I went with one of my classes to a community in the Central Region and got to meet with their assembly members to hear their take on development. Out of the three communities we have been to, this was the first one to truly recognize women and even gave them a voice to speak without being condescending.
My roommate Laura, Clarissa and myself decided to have ourselves a picture day last Saturday. Sometimes, you just have to make your own fun and we all know how much I love a good photoshoot! The pictures in this post are 2 of the 1200 that were taken. You will get to see more in some of my upcoming blogs so keep an eye out!
The University put out a public statement for the residents of Jubilee Hall and the International Student Hostels with the following statement: “This is to inform all residents of Jubilee Hall and the International Students Hostels that there are suspected thieves who are believed to be using spells and charms on students to collect their items such as laptops, phones, electronic cards, door keys, etc., from them”. I don’t think I got spelled – Level up!
There is also a rivalry between two dorms on campus. Last week they decided to get rowdy and there was a kidnapping and a huge fights with knife and things of sorts. The police eventually showed up with their AK’s and all was calmed…until next time. I wasn’t involved so, Level Up!
Also this month I beat Gerry in pool. He talks a good game and he did be me in the first round but I claimed my victory in game 2! I honestly impressed myself because I have magically gotten better at playing pool, thank you Jesus.
Finally, one of my favorite parts about month 3 is actually relating to month 4. I moved my flights up and I am coming home early! My last final is the morning of May 24th which means that I will still be spending my 21st birthday here but I don’t mind. I leave here the night of the 24th and when I get home, I am making a quick trip to school to see my friends then finally… home!
AND today is my sweet haddy girl’s birthday! Five whole years she has been living and nearly five years of being my parents favorite child!
The electricity is back on and I have to actually study for the third time this whole semester so I will leave you with this.
I currently have 6 other blog posts drafted so keep a look out for those.
I hope you have a happy week and don’t encounter any charms or curses!
